About this artwork

This piece is based on maps of the area in Avondale, where it is installed from 3 different time periods and shows how the landscape has changed over 80 years. The sculpture has 5 wedges that have three sides each and can all be rotated. When lined up, the first side is an abstract version of a map from 1939 and shows the organic rivers and rugged landscape. The second side is based on a map from 1979 and gets very geometric and green representing the introduction of farming, land divisions, and irrigation. The third side has new colors and shows how the farms have been further divided into subdivisions and industrial complexes and is based on a map from 2019.
