Spanning seven feet in width, the work evokes the silhouette of a distant mountain range—its peaks and valleys emerging through repetition, rhythm, and the subtle tension of hand-knotted cord. Constructed entirely from natural cotton fiber, the piece embraces a monochromatic palette that highlights form over color. The knots become topographical markers, rising and falling like weathered ridgelines shaped by wind and time. Their incremental variations suggest the slow, geological choreography of mountains—formed through pressure, uplift, and endurance. Each cord carries the memory of the artist’s touch, creating a landscape that is both physical and symbolic, grounded yet meditative. The composition invites viewers to experience the mountains not as monumental masses, but as living contours—structures of resilience that mirror human strength. The undulating patterns echo cycles of growth, ascent, and surrender, offering a visual metaphor for the challenges and triumphs that define our inner terrains. In its simplicity, Mountain Scapes reveals the power of minimalism: how a single material, thoughtfully manipulated, can summon a vast sense of place. This work shifts with light and perspective. From a distance, it reads as a serene panorama; up close, the intricacy of the knots and the subtle shadows between strands create a tactile dialogue, drawing the viewer into the details of its making. The result is a landscape that hovers between abstraction and familiarity—an homage to the mountains as guardians, storytellers, and reminders of what remains steady even as the world transforms. Mountain Scapes stands as an invitation to pause, breathe, and consider the landscapes—external and internal—that shape us.

Drawing from backgrounds in interior design, architectural drafting, and construction, Berning creates sculptural fiber works that merge softness with structure, transforming traditional textile processes into contemporary visual experiences. Inspired by the shifting colors, textures, and expansive horizons of the American Southwest, her work often incorporates dimensional weaving, tufting, knotting, and mixed-media techniques to evoke movement, emotion, and human connection. Through scale, repetition, and tactile form, Berning examines themes of belonging, transformation, love, and freedom. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and public art exhibitions throughout Arizona and beyond. Berning continues expanding her practice into large-scale architectural fiber installations and immersive public art experiences that invite viewers to reflect, connect, and engage emotionally within the spaces they inhabit.
