Meditations on color and texture

About the artist
James Adele Baxter
My current work investigates texture from a maximalist perspective. We are animals, meant to be surrounded by the richness of nature. And strangely, something about a complex visual field is soothing to the nervous system. I explore this through a meditative mark making process. Laying down marks in a repetitive and rhythmic way – by carving or stitching or painting – creates works that have a textural richness, similar to elements of the natural world. Both the end result and the process are integral to the work itself. ______________ Born and raised in south Scottsdale, James attended ASU and earned a BFA in painting. They worked as a graphic designer and web developer for 12 years. In 2021 they launched an art business — working on meditative and deeply personal abstract compositions in fibers, paint, and ceramics. James currently resides at Quail House, an intentional community in Ajo, Arizona, and manages the Ajo Community Clay Studio. In Ajo, they are represented by Art Under the Arches Fine Art Gallery. They are currently seeking representation in Phoenix.
