Ella Nicole Aretakis is a drawing and painting artist based in Arizona, currently pursuing a BFA in Drawing and Painting at Arizona State University. Working primarily in oil paint, her current practice explores the contradictions of femininity, particularly the relationship between beauty, self-presentation, and the realities of women’s everyday experiences. Through figurative paintings, Aretakis examines the spaces between preparation and performance, glamour and discomfort, and the ways women choose to present themselves to the world. Drawing from scenes of getting ready, nightlife, intimacy, and solitude, she is interested in how clothing, makeup, gesture, and environment shape the way femininity is experienced and perceived. Beauty becomes more than an ideal; it is a form of expression that can be empowering, complicated, vulnerable, and at times uncomfortable. Her work brings together moments of visual appeal and underlying tension, allowing beauty and its less polished realities to exist side by side. Through the physical presence of the figure and the atmosphere of each scene, Aretakis seeks to portray women as complex individuals whose experiences cannot be reduced to a single image or expectation.
