I’m Carla Meeske, a fine art photographer, and my mission is to bring the magical night sky into our hearts with breathtaking landscapes that are alive with the stars. The name for my genre is Nightscapes. When I find the perfect remote and dark location, I set up at dusk and shoot long into the night. Astro landscapres require long exposures to gather a lot of light on the sensor, even though it is pitch black outside. My camera has been modified to capture the Hydrogen Alpha waves that make the nebulas glow. Our eyes can’t naturally percieve this color, so camara’s are designed to filter it out. By removing that filter, the camera caputers the rays and translates them to their native magenta. I also use a star tracker that rotates counter clockwise to earth so the stars do not move in the frame over a long exposure. The stars stay tack sharp, but the ground gets blurry. To make it right, I take separate exposures of the sky with the tracker on, and the ground, with it off, and belnd thim into one magical image. The magic unfolds in Photoshop, where I enhance the colors to evoke the drama of our enchanting Southwestern earth and sky. I shoot the majority of my images in the Southwest US, where I live. The skys are dark, and the scenary is magnificient. I have converted my 4 Runner into a camper, and can go out for extended periods into remote country that evokes the freedom of life outside of our modern time. It’s an honor to stand alone under the shimmering skies, and sing to the night birds and the nocturnal creatures who are amused by my presence. I believe that we are beloved expressions of the cosmos and Earth. Earth is a special planet in our Milky Way Galaxy.
