About the artist
Hoagie Jay
I grew up drawing basically everything I could see. I’ve always had a fascination with how things fit together, and I tried to capture that in my art. I went through dozens of mediums and just couldn’t find something I enjoyed doing for more than a few months. Looking back, it was probably the ADHD. In 2024 I tried out a new medium, acrylic paint markers, and I fell in love. They’re the perfect combination of drawing and painting, and I can get super crisp details in ways a paint brush would never let me. Since then I’ve been painting non-stop. I work from home and at the Art Awakenings art therapy studio downtown, and I’ve had my work sell at First Friday, the State Fair, and at public art shows. I also sell prints of my work online and have been making commissions for family and friends. I plan to expand my horizons to more venues and work harder to advertise my art. It would be a dream to fulfill all my financial needs through my art, though I feel that’s far in the future for me. I love painting animals, especially cats, as well as internet memes and anything queer-related. I’ve recently taken an interest in painting magnetic canvases specifically. I can’t count the number of them I’ve made. They’re quick and fun to make, and I love the way I can pack so much detail into such a small space. I also run an Etsy store, Sunstone Sandwich, where I sell my art and jewelry. I am queer and non-binary, and my pronouns are they/them.
