About the artist
George Strasburger
Statement I am a realist painter, and I emulate old masters work. My technical focus is light and form, how light travels across the objects in my paintings and how it reveals the shape and depth of those objects. As a realist, a goal is the recreation of 3 dimensions faithfully in 2 dimensional space. However, this takes a back seat to the visual content. In my work are contemporary characters, carrying out normal acts that are often metaphors for themes that are deeper, more complex and interesting to me. My paintings are my inner dialogue that reflects my life, my surroundings, politics, spirituality, psychology and morality. There is also an exploration of persons on the societal fringe that reveal general societal truths. In these ways, my paintings are narrative and concocted in a theatrical way. I have a unique vision that contrasts beautifully with the stylistic scope of contemporary painting. Bio Strasburger was raised in a blue collar area of Scranton PA, the son of a house painter and stay at home mother. His earliest artistic influence was the murals in the Catholic Church that he attended daily as a child before class in a Catholic school. These illustrations of biblical scenes and lessons became his visual ideal of what art was. He started to paint at 12 years in the Boy’s Club of America and formal education, ending with 1.5 years of fine art instruction at Kutztown State College, PA, in the late 70s. In his middle age, he took 3 classes at the School of Visual Arts in NY in the illustration dept., gaining some technical skills. He has exhibited mostly in the Southwest US.
